Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
